Oh, this now opens too many possibilities.

She's either truly possessed, or she's been part of a conspiracy of sorts. Assuming from the "They'll notice," I'm sure it's probably the first. I can see a distinct change in personality, and not even a slight mark over the death of Syd.

It can be something entirely different too! Posted on January 3rd, 2011 at 12:55AM Reply

I forgot to mention this page states that Ariel (whether it is her or not, doesn't matter) is working with Solaris. However if this is in fact an intelligent being from the plane of Magic, this means Solaris is probably not fully in control right now. This can mean we are allowed to expect his death anytime soon. Why oh why do you torture us with such short comics, especially when you update once a week? I need more content. I am salivating over the story line, and only obtaining meager portions of comic-sustenance. D: Posted on January 3rd, 2011 at 04:53AM Reply

I just realized something: Syd is still on the character page AND is on the new wallpaper they're talking about. Why would he be there if he just dies 18 weeks in and that's the end of him? Posted on January 3rd, 2011 at 06:30AM

Turned to stone, and could have died, but survived.
IF Syd was alive when he was turned to stone, he could still survive the process. Maybe. IF syd was alive. Posted on January 9th, 2011 at 11:37PM

Hmm. What interests me the most is her last line 'You're going to tell me what to do?'

Just a thought here:
What if Ariel isn't possessed, and simply wanted the power offered by Solaris?
She does what Solaris tells her to, and gets this power; however, it involves killing Syd (yes, he's really dead, look at his cast page. Unless it's all a trick...). As she now has, seemingly, gained this power, she thinks that she stands equal to Solaris in ability, so she thinks she doesn't have to listen to him any more.
Sadly this goes against what it says on her cast page, so in all honesty I don't think its very likely, but I like the idea anyways.
Besides, possession seems kinda obvious, so I hope the creators of this comic like sending curve-balls as much as I hope they do. Posted on January 3rd, 2011 at 03:50PM Reply

I sort of assumed it was some sort of summoning, possibly of a lesser demon. Or possibly a simple light spell. Depending on the rules of the world, some light spells let you form the small light that is summoned to look like whatever you wish, in this case apparently a dragon. Brian replied:
Most likely. They are probably native to the plane of magic, and probably can use magic as well, maybe even produce the magical energy naturally, the same magic mages draw out of the plane. If that's the case, demons are probably going to be really hard to kill. Posted on January 4th, 2011 at 03:48PM

Has no one noticed that magic is generally used for defense (or with Solaris, undesirable evil) yet Ariel is using it carelessly? Maybe she isn't under Solaris' control. Maybe the thing he did was summoning a being from the other side of their magic. And now it's inhabiting her? I mean she has a little light dragon (which is totally awesome by the way) and she doesn't care for what Solaris has to say. If Solaris summoned a being he thought he could control then turns out it has a mind of it's own that could easily be Ariel right now. I don't know..... it seems probable. :/ Posted on January 5th, 2011 at 12:38AM Reply

I think the dragon is just a toy, Ariel isn't really paying attention to Solaris right now so I'm assuming she's bored and just using it as a plaything while listening to him. Maybe it's a pet. Posted on January 5th, 2011 at 02:38AM Reply

Ebonclad replied:
Yeah. I bet it's just there to show that whatever "Ariel" is right now has such command over magic that it casually uses it for frivolous little displays like that to amuse itself when it's bored. Don't think the little flame sprite thing itself is of great importance (though if it's not a construct of some sort it's probably some minor creature from the plane of magic)... Also on Ariel's cast page it says she's kind-hearted and compassionate, so she was probably possesed the night she was caught 'snooping' by Solaris. I think that would also explain why she's being all 'badass' now.

Also I believe that turning Syd into stone was a ceremonial part of his funeral, as preservation and as a place to leave flowers and stuff. Posted on January 5th, 2011 at 02:44AM Reply

Re: the apparent death of Syd, I'm... not certain. I wouldn't take the cast page change as absolute proof (you never know with these tricksy writers), and there's plenty of precedent in fantasy for petrification being reversible. I'm just not sure what Solaris and his questionable friends would have to gain from only faking Syd's death.

For that matter, I'm not entirely sure what they had to gain from his actual death. Making sure everyone on the council is either in on their little "club," in the dark, or under their control? Eliminating someone they knew was bright and good-intentioned enough to be a threat eventually? Keeping him from meddling with whatever plans they had for Ariel? As a sacrifice or condition of sorts to whatever shonky force they've gotten involved with?

Anyway, quite possibly they don't intend for the petrification to be undone, so they didn't care whether or not he was actually dead when they did it. The possibility is certainly there. Ariel (when she regains control, if she can) would seem to be maybe the most traditional candidate, as fantasy narrative goes, but in the absence of a fully in-control Ariel, I wouldn't rule out Mar, either.

Or maybe I'm just overthinking things and getting everything wildly wrong! Mmmm, speculation. Posted on January 6th, 2011 at 03:26AM Reply

I'm just not clear as to why this all happened to Syd in the first place. From what i can tell, he only got involved because Ariel suggested it. In addition, i don't think he really saw it as some big deception. It was, again, Ariel, who went snooping for the documents.

While he was not worthy, apparently, I can't help but wonder if this whole death is staged and that he is really alive or soon to be revived, considering the rules of magic of this universe have yet to be defined by us. He could be having his death for show because of the secrecy of the project he may be getting involved in. I guess he could have been killed off because "he's seen too much" but considering it was always someone pushing him in a direction, it just seems odd.

In terms of Ariel, I would favor possession as well, and of a being of great power, such that it feels no threat from others. I saw the little creature as nothing more then a pet or minor spell for entertainment, not a representative of what could be controlling her. Posted on January 6th, 2011 at 06:18AM Reply

Going into possession, I believe as another post said, we may be dealing with demons, or just intelligent life in the plane of magic. There's only one thing that's certain: The Plane of Magic is merging with the other Plane. So it means it's easier to draw out power from it, and perhaps even riskier, as proved with Syd's death. It's possible whatever controlling Ariel is most likely not entirely subdued by Solaris, and we may expect another death very soon. Posted on January 6th, 2011 at 07:21PM

Ebonclad replied:
It's gotta be more than being power drunk. Her entire demeanour is very different. Facial expression, body language, the way she talks, the way she reacts to people. Even when she isn't necessarily aware that anyone's watching (and if she was only acting, as with the conspiracy theory, what would be the point?). Either Ariel has been damn good actor (and pretty two-faced) all her life until now, or it isn't her any more. Posted on January 8th, 2011 at 09:53AM

Brian replied:
When coming down to conspiracy, we can go down as far as One Piece's famous CP9. They faked being shipwrights for years, ended up being a major part of the community, and could still end up betraying them all and not even regretting it one bit. I believe only the french-fry nose regretted it.

Being Power Drunk can cause that, although it can also be a side effect of possession.

I'm still going strong with possession, most likely intelligent life native to the Plane of Magic. Whatever it is, be it a demon, monster, phantom, it's obviously not in Solaris' control. It's possible some sort of negotiating or discussing has occurred between them, but we can expect some big trouble popping up tomorrow. Posted on January 9th, 2011 at 11:44PM
